THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY LED THE WAY to have this billboard promotion for historic preservation installed on Friday, May 15, on Airport Way across from the mill. The tag line, “This Place Matters” is a national promotion developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Billboard space was donated by the IconGroupe, owners of the huge structure that was built in 2006 just across the river, which created a bit of controversy

Printing of the 12 by 48 foot long “bulletin” as it’s called in the trade, was provided at their cost by Graphic Print Solutions in Portland, OR.

In exchange for a $100 sponsorship, to cover the printing and installation expenses, sponsors are listed across the bottom. Thanks to Karen Guzak, owner of Yoga Circle Studio, who was the first to sign up; to Gary and Penny Ferguson who spoke up immediately for their family and Friends of the Snohomish Library; to Kandace Harvey with three sponsorships — Snohomish Flying Service, Skydive Snohomish, and Harvey Airfield; to Pam at the Chamber of Commerce for the iShop Snohomish promotion; and thanks to Andy, owner of the Snohomish Bakery and new president of the Historic Downtown Snohomish Association.

Some 37 years ago or so, the Society led the way to the establishment of the historic districts by city council, followed by a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. In fact the formation of the Society was sparked by the loss of our older buildings, and while they may not have said the words, their actions were motivated by the notion that “this place matters.”

Great job on the sign Warner and all! I’m thinking of doing this down in Shoreline! Wonderful job getting people to contribute and Snohomish does truly matter. What will people see in 100 years if we don’t preserve it now!

Thanks to all of you for everything you do!
